Rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and machineguns have all been used in six days of clashes in the port city, in the deadliest violence to rock the country for years. Most of the fighting has been between residents of the Sunni Bab el-Tebbaneh district, who support the rebels battling to topple Assad, and people in the Jabal Mohsen Alawite area who back him.

Four people from Bab el-Tebbaneh were reported dead overnight, the security source said, including one who died of his wounds, and one was reported killed in the opposite camp.

The clashes subsided at dawn, but snipers were still operating in the area. At least 204 people have also been wounded in the fighting that erupted in Tripoli on Sunday, the source told AFP.

Thursday was the bloodiest day with 11 killed.

World News : A massive undersea earthquake Friday in Russia’s Far East prompted a tsunami warning and unleashed tremors across Russia including in Moscow around 10,000 kilometres away, but caused no casualties or damage.

The USGS estimated the quake at 8.3 magnitude and placed its epicentre in the Sea of Okhotsk off the shore of the Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of more than 600 kilometres (370 miles).

Russia issued a tsunami warning for Sakhalin island and its region, urging residents to seek higher ground. But the warning was later lifted with no reports of casualties.

The huge magnitude and great depth of the quake meant that its echoes were felt across the Eurasian continent including in the Russian capital itself.

“The whole plate — on which the continent stands — shook,” Anatoly Tsygankov of the state Rosgidromet environmental monitoring service told AFP.

“And this movement of the continental plate was felt all over Russia — not just in Moscow, we received calls from Nizhny Novgorod and other cities,”

In the nearest city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, around 350 kilometres away, the quake was felt to a magnitude of up to 5 but there were no casualties or damage, the emergency situations ministry said.

“Aftershocks of a magnitude of up to 2 were recorded in Krasnoyarsk, Tomsk and Novosibirsk regions [of Siberia] as well as several others,” the emergency situations ministry said.

The emergencies ministry in Moscow, which is eight time zones away from the region hit by the quake, said it had received reports of chandeliers swinging and water in aquariums shaking as a result of the quake.

“In Moscow, the earthquake was felt on the top floors of high-rise buildings,” the ministry said.

In central Moscow, around 700 staff of an insurance company were evacuated for an hour after some saw furniture move and windows shaking, the Echo of Moscow radio station reported.

Several other office buildings in central and eastern Moscow were briefly evacuated, witnesses wrote on Twitter, posting photographs of people huddled on the street.

The emergency ministry even opened a hotline number to calm shaken Muscovites.

“Moscow is part of the zone where possible repercussions from earthquakes can be felt. It’s not dangerous but important, for example, for building standards,” Arkady Tishkov of the Geography Institute at the Russian Academy of Sciences told Interfax.

He said however that the last time this happened in Moscow was 30 years ago.

“In Moscow, underground tremors were felt for the last time in 1984 when there was an earthquake in Moldova and Romania,” Yury Varakin, the head of Rosgidromet’s situation centre, told AFP.

A 22-storey office building in Saint Petersburg was evacuated after the people working there felt the building shaking, the local emergency situations ministry said.

“People reported that they felt the building vibrating like during an earthquake and some started leaving their desks,” the ministry said.

“We are studying the building. The people have been evacuated.”

The waves from such a quake travel long distances deep beneath Earth’s surface, said Alexei Lyubushin, chief researcher of the Institute of Physics of the Earth at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“If an earthquake happens at such a low depth, the waves move along low layers, practically the mantle,” he told Kommersant FM radio.

“The waves can even move through the Earth’s core,” he added.

There have been four major earthquakes with a similar epicentre since 1988 but because of their great depth they have not caused damage, the USGS said. (AFP)

Pakistan News : Police claim to have busted a Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) terrorist network which was assigned the task of targeting politicians during the 2013 elections.

They have arrested six suspected terrorists along with a woman and seized a suicide jacket, hand grenades and more than 70 kilograms of explosives and materials being used for IED and explosives jackets.

Station House Officer of Chamkani Police station Haji Abdul Hameed speaking to Dawn.Com said that the police arrested the suspects, during a raid on a house in the Tarnab Farms area of the city outskirts.

“We have seized an eight kilograms suicide jacket ready for use, three hand grenades, IED making accessories and about 70 kilograms of explosives,” he stated.

The arrested accused have been identified as Rohullah, Asadullah Irfanullah, Kashti Gul and Ishfaq Hussain. The latter individual was the main explosive supplier to the gang.

“Ishfaq has admitted that they had links to the TTP in South Waziristan Agency and were carrying out attacks on its directive,” he said.

Ishfaq Hussain, who was presented along with the other accused before the media, admitted on the occasion that they were involved in attacks on former minister and ANP candidate Arbab Ayub Jan and also the election office of NA-46 candidate in Maqsoodabad area of Peshawar.

Another arrested accused Rohullah on the occasion said that they had links to the TTP and had carried out attacks on their directive.

He however remained silent when asked what their next target was and what their future plans had been.

Three of the arrested accused were teenagers and appear to have been on an unknown mission, which is what the explosives and IEDs were being prepared for.

Police said they had also seized hand grenades, fuses, wires, batteries and remote controlled devices from the house and were conducting further investigations.

Pakistan News : British police Friday arrested a couple of passengers on suspicion of endangerment of the aircraft after forcing a Pakistan International Airways (PIA) Flight PK709 to land at Stansted airport following a mid-air alert.

According to sources both the British nationality holder Pakistani nationals were arrested after they reportedly had a spat with the crew.

According to PIA sources the suspects had allegedly threatened to bomb the plane with explosives. A panicked stewardess alarmed the pilot, Captain Nadeem Sufi, who sent a stress signal to London control tower triggering the security alert, which led to the force-landing of the plane.

There were 297 passengers and 11 crew members were on the plane.

Initially Essex Police said that a man namely Mohammad Shafqat, and a woman, Ammara Ashraf have been arrested and removed from the plane, which is on an isolated runway at the airport.

Reportedly, it all started after Mohammad Shafqat and Ammara Ashraf, traveling with a number of other family members, engaged in a hot argument, which went out of control forcing the crew to intervene, who were warned to stay out of it.

The quarreling family went as far threatening the crew that they were going to blow the plane up, which caused this whole panic. However, they were released after police found out it was a petty domestic squabble.

A passenger Nauman Rizvi told GEO News that two passengers who had tried to move toward the cockpit during the flight were handcuffed and arrested once the plane landed. Rizvi said that after the men were taken away, the flight crew told passengers there had been a terrorist threat and that the pilot had raised an alarm.

Later, there were reports that another couple of men apart from the fussing spouses were also arrested amid the panic. Two men, aged 30 and 41, were held on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft, Essex Police said

Earlier, Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon jets were scrambled to intercept the PIA plane, which escorted the Manchester-bound flight to Stansted.

Flight PK709 from Lahore was due to land at Manchester Airport in north west England at 1230 GMT. The plane was diverted to Stansted airport, east of central London, according to a Manchester Airport spokesman.

Essex Police, who are responsible for the area where Stansted is located, said an incident had occurred on a flight and they were investigating.

“The plane diverted to Stansted Airport has now landed at the airport. Police + partners are continuing to respond,” Essex Police in southeast England said in a Twitter message.

All the passengers were disembarked at the Stansted Airport and no one has been hurt, an airport spokesman said.

The news comes two days after a soldier was hacked to death on a London street in an incident the government are treating as a terrorist incident.

Sports News : Misbah ul-Haq has told his Pakistan team they must improve in all three departments ahead of Sunday’s series decider with Ireland.

Kevin O’Brien hit a dramatic four off the last ball of the first one-day international on Thursday to deny Pakistan victory and earn Ireland a dramatic tie — the 28th in ODI history.

“Full credit to Ireland. They needed almost 10 an over for the last 12 overs but they batted well and we know we will have to improve our performance,” said Misbah.

In contrast, Ireland got so close to their victory target of 276 in 47 overs that the tie felt like a loss, according to O’Brien, whose unbeaten 84 was his highest score for Ireland since his century masterminded the shock of the 2011 World Cup, when the Irish defeated England in Bangalore.

“To come so close and not get over the line is tough to take but when we have time to reflect I suppose it will be easier to take,” said O’Brien.

“Irish cricket is ever improving, we just need to get a bit more consistency. Everyone knows we are a good team, we just need to put five, six, seven good performances in a row.

“We definitely feel we can win the series. We respect Pakistan, they are a great team but we have nothing to fear having come so close here, we know a different bounce of the ball and we come out with a victory and that’s what we will be targeting on Sunday.

”In contrast, Pakistan were trying to take the positives from a game they were always winning until the last ball of the game.

They hit 144 off the last 16 overs, after the fourth and final rain delay of the match, to reach 266 for five with Mohammad Hafeez scoring 122 not out, and would have been confident of defending Ireland’s revised target of 276. Agencies
