Polling underway in NA-61 by-elections

pakistan votingKARACHI: Polling was ongoing for the NA-61 (Chakwal II) by-elections on Wednesday. The seat had become vacant with the resignation of the previous Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Faiz Taman.

There are eight candidates contesting, but only two front runners: Sardar Mansoor Hayat Taman and Sardar Mumtaz Taman.

Mansoor Hayat Taman, despite being a member of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), is contesting the elections as an independent candidate. He has the support of PPP MPA Fauzia Behram and other PPP local leaders except for the party’s district president Shah Jahan Sarfaraz Raja. However, Mumtaz Taman is contesting from the platform of the PML-N.

A tough contest is expected between the two.

There are 395,039 registered voters in this constituency and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has set up 363 polling stations. Out of these, 38 polling stations have been declared sensitive.

Polling will continue till 5pm.
