PEMRA suspends Geo News license

Geo News license Suspended

Pakistan News : Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Friday has suspended license of Geo News television for 15 days along with a fine of Rs10 million for maligning country’s top intelligence agency.

The government body took the decision on a complaint filed by the Ministry of Defence.

Sources said the PEMRA has formally informed the channel not to air its transmission for 15 days.

On April 24, PEMRA issued a show-cause notice to Geo News on the behest of Ministry of Defence for violating the code of conduct while covering attack on prominent anchor Hamid Mir.

The ministry said Geo had maligned armed forces by airing image of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt. Gen. Zaheer-ul-Islam following the gun attack on Hamid Mir in Karachi on April 19. The channel through its telecast tried to involve ISI in Mir’s attack.

The ISI had vehemently denied the accusation.

The following is the text of the press release issued by PEMRA.

“The 96th Authority Meeting of PEMRA was held on 6th June, 2014 at PEMRA Headquarters Islamabad at 9.45 am. The meeting was convened by the newly appointed Chairman PEMRA Mr. Muhammad Parvez Rathore under Rule 3(4) of PEMRA Rules 2009. Besides other agenda items, the complaint filed by Ministry of Defence against GEO News was deliberated upon in light of the legal opinion of the Ministry of Law.
