PESHAWAR: An explosion struck near police headquarters in Kohat on Tuesday, killing 12 people and wounding 11 other, police said.
“Most of the victims were women and children, and 10 houses were badly damaged,” Khalid Khan, a top administrative official in Kohat, told AFP.
“We have imposed an emergency in Kohat’s hospitals,” Khan added.
The toll of 12 dead and 50 wounded was also confirmed by a senior police official, Dilawar Bangash.
“It was a big explosion. I am on site and can see the smoke. Several people have been wounded,” said Bangash.
Police said a nearby police residential complex had also been severely damaged and houses had collapsed, trapping several people in the rubble.
Police said it was a bomb blast but they were investigating whether a suicide bomber had targeted the area or someone had planted a bomb.
