World News – India’s ambassador to Washington says her country wants closer trade ties with archrival Pakistan, despite a spike in tensions between South Asia’s nuclear rivals.
Nirupama Rao also said Friday that overland trade from war-battered Afghanistan to India via Pakistan would be a boon to regional stability.
Her comments come despite a fraying in recently improved relations between the nuclear rivals.
India this week accused Pakistan of involvement in a militant attack in Kashmir, and Pakistan’s parliament condemned India’s hanging of a Kashmiri man convicted in a terror attack that New Delhi blamed on Pakistan.
Rao said India is waiting for Pakistan to implement its decision to grant India “most favoured nation” trade status. She said that would boost confidence and allow closer trade ties. Agencies
