Sports News – Pakistan to play India for hockey’s Asia championship on Thursday after the Green Shirts brushed aside Japan 5-2 in the last pool game of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy on Wednesday in Doha, Qatar.
Abdul Haseem Khan and Waqas Sharif scored twice each as Shakeel Abbasi scored one goal to guide the Greenshirts to a comprehensive victory. However, Pakistan’s fate was dependent on the result of the match between Malaysia and India.
Malaysia, who did not reach the final despite a 5-3 win over India, needed to win by a margin of four goals or more to qualify.
Defending champions India suffered a shock 3-5 defeat at the hands of Malaysia in their last and inconsequential league match of the tournament on Wednesday.
India had defeated Pakistan 4-2 via penalty shootout in the inaugural edition in Ordos, China, last year after both sides were locked goal-less in the regulation time of the final match.
The tournament comprised six top teams from Asia – Pakistan, China, India, Oman, Malaysia and Japan.
Pakistan thrashed Oman in their opening match 8-3, followed by a 5-2 win over China, a 3-3 draw against Malaysia and lost 2-1 to India who they had beaten to clinch the bronze medal at the Champions Trophy earlier this month. Agencies
