20th Amendment draft approved by the Cabinet

Earlier, the cabinet articulated “full confidence” in PM Gilani as he prepares to go on trial for disrespect of court, which could charge him his job.

“The cabinet unanimously applauded the conduct of the prime minister in the Supreme Court and reposed full confidence in his leadership,” his office said in a announcement.

Gilani thanked the cabinet and said he was premier “due to the support of members of parliament, his cabinet contemporaries and of the coalition partners”.

The Supreme Court had questioned the lawful status of the lawmakers who had been voted in by-elections held at a time when the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was incomplete due to non-appointment of its members as required under the 18th Amendment.

According to sources, the government and conflict have also agreed that the procedure to remove the member of the election commission will be same as that adopted to remove a judge.
