Flood hit Thailand Capital, Authorities warns

A special five-day holiday was announced so that people could escape the rising floodwaters.

A main road out of the city to the flood-free south was grid-locked Thursday, while domestic check-in counters at Bangkok’s international Suvarnabhumi airport were extremely crowded.

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who said two weeks ago that Bangkok was likely to escape the floodwaters, warned on Wednesday that the city could be flooded for as long as a month.

Bangkok authorities had hoped that the city could be protected from the worst flooding in the country in 60 years, floodwaters moving south, coupled with unusually high tides, are creating a nightmare scenario for the country’s disaster management agency.
