Pakistan News: An Anti-Terrorism court granted death sentence to Mumtaz Qadri who was arrested in Salman Taseer Murder Case; on Saturday October 1, 2011.
Mr. Salman Taseer who was gun downed by his security guard who was personnel of Punjab Elite Force Mumtaz Qadri on January 04, 2011 near Kohsar Market Capital City Islamabad.
The Anti-Terrorism court awarded death sentenced on 1st October, 2011, his lawyers told by telephone on foreign news agency.
Mumtaz Qadri had previous plead guilty in court that he had murdered Punjab governor Salman Taseer for his ‘Blasphemous’ speech.
Mumtaz Qadri’s followers took to the streets to criticize the sentence soon after it was handed down.
“By punishing one Mumtaz Qadri, you will produce a thousand Mumtaz Qadris!” one man shouted through a megaphone outside the jail.
The court handed down two death sentences for murder and terrorism to Mumtaz Qadri, who has seven days to file an appeal, state television reported.
Reporters and other members of the public were not allowed in to the hearing and it was not known if Qadri attended.
