US will continue to work with Pakistan for Davis release

Breaking News: President Barack Obama on Tuesday said Raymond Davis, a U.S. consluate employee detained in Pakistan over killing of two men, is an American diplomat and that his administration would continue to work with Pakistan for his release.

Obama, speaking at a White House Press Conference, said Washington respects diplomats and expects Islamabad to uphold the Geneva Convention governing world diplomats status and  recognize Davis as a diplomat.

“We are going to be continuing to work with Pakistani government to get this person released,” Obama responded to a question.  The U.S. president noted that a couple of Pakistanis were killed in the incident involving Davis last month and observed that the U.S. is alive to that fact.
“So, obviously, we are concerned about the loss of life. We are not callous about that.”
But, he added, there is a ‘broader principle at stake, that, I think, we have to uphold.” —APP
