PIA staff strike grounds more planes

Pakistan News: A spokesman for Pakistan International Airlines said a pilot strike — now in its second day — has grounded 10 flights and stranded hundreds of passengers in the capital, Islamabad.

A small group of pilots and support staff for PIA are unhappy about a proposed route-sharing deal with Turkish Airlines.

Protest disrupts PIA flightsPIA bosses say the proposal could increase profitability but some of the airline’s 20,000 employees fear it will lead to job or pay cuts, though management denies this.

Spokesman Mashhood Tajwar said on Wednesday the strikers are mainly in Islamabad, where both domestic and international flights are on hold.

Plagued by bad management and competition from Gulf airlines, PIA has posted multimillion dollar losses for years.
