ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Wednesday that the present democratic regime is striving for ‘financial reconciliation’ to steer the country out of economic crisis.
While speaking as chief guest at the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected office bearers of All Pakistan Akhbar Farosh Federation here, he said that the government has taken all political parties onboard in the process of financial reconciliation.Kaira said that after coming to power the present government, with the cooperation of all political forces, has successfully pursued the policy of political reconciliation and has removed mistrust between federation and the provinces through 18th Amendment and National Finance Commission award. He said that there is an impression that the political forces cannot reach a consensus but they have proved their critics wrong by passing 18th and 19th amendments and NFC Award with consensus.
He said that the government has taken many unpopular decisions in the larger national interest, despite the fact that such decisions can affect its popularity. “Such decisions have been taken as the love for the country is above the party and national interest comes before the interest of the party,” he added.
Kaira said that the PPP believes in freedom of expression as no true democracy can exist without a free media. He said that the PPP government never took any action against any media group despite the fact that a certain media group has indulged in character assassination of the government and party. It is media’s right to expose the weaknesses and shortcomings of the government but there should not be a targeted personal campaign against the regime.
The minister assured the Akhbar Farosh Federation of the government’s all out support for resolution of their problems. He said the PPP government is pro-media and the media also includes the workers and their rights would be protected at all cost.
He invited the leaders of Akhbar Farosh Federation to meet him for finalization of modalities for implantation of their demands. The minister said that the newspaper hawkers would be registered with Employees Old Age Benefit Institute (EOBI) like the working journalists in near future.
