Petition seeking Musharraf’s return filed

ISLAMABAD: The first petition filed with the newly-setup Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeks orders for bringing former president Pervez Musharraf back to Pakistan to face charges against him.

Petition seeking Musharraf’s return filedShahjahan Khan Durrani has cited the federal government and the ministry of law as respondents in his petition.

Calling himself founder of ‘the General Pervez Musharraf Himayat Tehrik’, Mr Durrani in his two-page petition said the former president should ignore advice by Maj-Gen (retd) Rashid Qureshi and Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif and return home.

He said there had been several accusations against Mr Musharraf, including the ones regarding the Lal Masjid operation, assassination of Benazir Bhutto and Nawab Akbar Bugti, promulgation of the National Reconciliation Ordinance and abrogating the Constitution.

These accusations have affected the reputation and economy of the country, Mr Durrani said, adding that the former president should be called back to face these charges in the larger interest of the country.

It is unclear when the IHC would take up the case. The appointment of Iqbal Hamoodur Rehman as chief justice of the IHC has yet to be approved by the eight-member parliamentary committee.
